For this review we used the app version available directly from the Google Play Store (not the APK file). Read on to see how we found Hook VPN's usability, performance, and security/privacy protocols.

Note: Please ensure you are aware of the risks when using a free VPN. Always opt for a reputable service (you can find suggestions below, just before our conclusion). For safety tips visit our article '8 Essential Tips for Using a Free VPN Safely'.

What is Hook VPN?

Hook VPN is a freemium Virtual Private Network app available exclusively for Android (5.0 and above) devices, by developer Charles KEV.

App details from the developer:

"Hook VPN provides a fast, reliable, and secure proxy to unblock any content and browse anonymously. Free & unlimited bandwidth, network of blazing fast servers and connections globally. The best VPN for Android recognized by award choice 2021 for the most innovative VPN solution. Using state of the art connection optimization technology and military grade encryption provides the highest level of reliability and security for your connection."

Usability

Hook VPN is designed to be user-friendly, making it easy for even novice users to navigate. The app doesn't require a log-in, and the interface is clean and straightforward, with a simple on/off button to connect/disconnect from your chosen VPN server location.

The ads for the free version can be an annoyance though, popping up repeatedly. For example, when we tried to review the apps privacy policy, the link was broken, and we received the same ad every time we attempted to reload it.

Performance

In our own tests, the free version of Hook VPN had a consistently fast connection speed. This allowed us to connect to a server located 4,000 miles away with 1 click (and a brief ad), where we were able to watch videos on YouTube at 1080p with no buffering.

The app boasts an extensive server network, with 'thousands of high-speed servers' located in multiple countries (60+) around the world. This global presence allows users to bypass geo-restrictions and access content from different regions.

Hook VPN also offers unlimited bandwidth for browsing, streaming and/or downloading, ensuring users can enjoy their online activities without any restrictions.

Security and Privacy

Hook VPN utilizes DNS and IP Leak protected technology, with advanced military grade encryption protocols to secure user data and communications, employing encryption via OpenVPN protocols (UDP and TCP).

There is no mention of a no-logs policy, but it is stated 'privacy is fully protected' and there is 'no record of internet browsing'.

In terms of Googles Data Safety audit (provided by the developer), no user data is shared with third parties, with the only data collected consisting of 'device or other IDs' for the purpose of 'advertising or marketing'. Data is listed as encrypted in transit being transferred over a secure connection.

How Much Does Hook VPN Cost?

While the core service is completely free, Hook VPN does offer a range of subscription plans to cater to different needs.

The pricing is competitive, costing $3.29 for 1 month, $4.39 for 3 months, $6.59 for 6 months or $9.49 for a full year.

Premium subscribers receive high-speed HD streaming, an unlimited data plan, and 30+ extra virtual locations.

Some premium servers can also be accessed for free, at the cost of watching an ad.

Where to Download Hook VPN?

Hook VPN can be downloaded directly from Google Play Store here, the APK file is also available at Malavida for those who require it.

User Ratings

Hook VPN has over 1 million downloads on the Play Store with an average user rating of 4.2 stars (from 4,000 reviews).

Some reviews dated 2023 do suggest serious connectivity issues that we did not experience. Most of these reviews however, were from before the app's most recent update on November 24th 2023, so perhaps these issues have since been fixed.

Please let us know your experiences with Hook VPN (positive or negative) here.

Conclusion

Hook VPN for Android offers a user-friendly experience with excellent performance and robust security features. The app's usability makes it accessible to all users, while its fast connection speed ensures a smooth online experience.

With advanced encryption Hook VPN appears to prioritize user privacy and security. The extensive server network allows users to bypass geo-restrictions and access content from around the world. Additionally, the app's competitive premium pricing make it a compelling choice for Android users.

Unfortunately, the repetitive ads do add to the connection time, and the lack of access (as we experienced) to the privacy policy, along with the missing no-logs policy, could be a concern for some users.

We encourage interested users to consider trying the app for themselves.
